Seymour Whyte wins Barton Highway Duplication

Seymour Whyte, in an alliance with Transport for NSW and design-partner SMEC, has been selected to deliver the first stage of the Barton Highway duplication between Canberra and Murrumbateman, 280 kilometres south west of Sydney, NSW.

Seymour Whyte Managing Director and CEO, John Kirkwood, said the upgrade includes a new two-lane northbound carriageway, modifications to the existing Barton Highway, turning bays and bus turnaround bay, intersection upgrades, drainage works and relocation of services and utilities, as well as landscaping work.

"We are delighted to be part of the Barton Highway Alliance with Transport for NSW and SMEC to deliver this program of work in a collaborative approach between the public and private sector," Mr Kirkwood said.

In announcing the win, Seymour Whyte General Manager Southern Steve Lambert said, "Through a well-designed interactive process, Seymour Whyte was able to showcase a strong team and innovative engineering solutions in collaboration with Transport."

"We were also able to drive efficient scoping of the design to get maximum value for our client."

"Seymour Whyte looks forward to delivering the Barton Highway into the future through our smart alliance partnership."

Barton Highway Upgrade Project Manager, Ian Chaffey, said the upgrade will provide safer and quicker journeys for the 13,000 motorists who use the corridor every day, improving travel times and safety.

"It will improve access to essential services in Canberra and make communities along the highway an even better place to live, work and visit," Mr Chaffey said.

Geotechnical investigations along the Barton Highway are expected to begin in September with construction work to start later in the year.
