Senior Safety Coordinator Peter Lawrence was named winner of the Safety Champion 1: Safety Officer Award at the 2017 CCF NSW President’s Gala Ball on 10 November.
An industry veteran with more than 25 years’ experience, Mr Lawrence was lauded for his dedication, hard work and collaborative approach that delivers safety excellence on the Narellan Road Upgrade in Western Sydney.
Seymour Whyte Regional Manager – Southern Steve Lambert congratulated Mr Lawrence on his win. “Peter is an outstanding example of our Safety Team—he balances strong regulatory compliance with coaching and education to inspire safety leadership amongst his project team,” he said.
“Peter understands the complex challenges that face the team and works with them to develop practical, safety focussed solutions.
“For example, he helps ensure major works, like shutting the Hume Highway to land 52 m long beams, are completed safely. Peter has also done great work in implementing the project’s innovative blue cone system, which reduced the rate of high potential incidents by 78% in the 10 months following its implementation.”
Narellan Road Upgrade Project Manager Scott Calleja highlighted that Mr Lawrence championed the importance of mental as well as physical health, and was proactive in his approach to the rehabilitation of workers returning from injury.
“Peter finds workers meaningful tasks to complete as they return to full physical fitness and keeps an eye on their mental as much as their physical recovery,” said Mr Calleja.
“He provides support and encourages the entire team to look after one another. He has delivered toolbox talks on issues such as depression, anxiety and suicide prevention and actively promotes conversations to increase awareness and reduce stigma.”
Other Seymour Whyte nominees for the CCF NSW 2017 People Awards were:
- Aboriginal Employee of the Year: Clint Hemsworth
- Engineer – Contracts over $2m: Dirk Drysdale and Blake Miles
