Townsville Port Access Road

Location: Townsville, Queensland
The Townsville Port Access Road project (TPAR) is a design and construct joint venture between SWC and Abigroup for the Department of Transport and Main Roads with Aecom undertaking the detailed design and is delivered as an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The project consists of three main sections:
  • The Stuart Bypass
  • Easter Access Corridor
  • Ross River Bridge

Stuart Bypass
Section One of the project was the Stuart Bypass. It is a new two-lane, 2.5km road connecting the Flinders Highway to the Bruce highway allowing heavy vehicles and industrial traffic to bypass the residential areas of Stuart and Wulguru and includes a grade separation of the North Coast Rail Line.

This section involved the construction of a four-span road/ rail overpass bridge with reinforced earth walls at each abutment, a three span bridge over Stuart Creek, widening and reconstructing areas of the Bruce and Flinders Highways, drainage, street lighting, ITS and local road upgrades.

Eastern Access Corridor
The second stage, the Eastern Access Corridor, is a 7.5km new link from the Bruce Highway into the Townsville Port, including 4 bridges and 14 drainage structures. This section, which is constructed across floodplains, involves working in a sensitive environmental area.

Initially a two-lane road, the road corridor includes provision for another two lanes in the future, as well as rail and other services such as telecommunications and power.

Ross River Bridge
The final stage, will involve the construction of a multi-span bridge over the Ross River, linking the new access corridor to the Port of Townsville.
