St Lawrence Rail Bridge Opens

On 27th January 2010 Seymour Whyte completed works on the new St Lawrence Creek Bridge for Queensland Rail in Northern Queensland. The new bridge will allow the main northern rail line to be moved off the deteriorating 1920’s asset and onto the new modern and high quality structure with improved flood immunity and the ability to cope with increasing freight and passenger loads to and from North Queensland.

The highly successful project included delivering the first active corrosion protection incorporated into a new concrete structure by QR. This required exacting tolerances both in precast beams and in-situ headstocks and other concrete elements. Driving both temporary and permanent piles from highly engineered falsework and working in a 8m tidal range through a number of cyclones tested the team to its limits.

Working collaboratively with the QR staff and temporary works designers, Bonacci Group, Seymour Whyte developed improved constructability solutions, increasing both safety and productivity and minimising the impact of the key projects risks. This very complex, remote area project has seen Seymour Whyte’s Department of Transport and Main Roads prequalification rating increase to the highest technical ratings (R5, B4, F7). The project was completed with very high levels of satisfaction from QR, and an exemplary safety record.

Seymour Whyte’s success on this project is part of the proudly Queensland based company’s strong growth story and signifies the companies increasing capability in the delivery of more complex projects. The company’s collaborative approach with its customers and partners and strong reputation as a joint venture and alliance partner has allowed Seymour Whyte to play a key role in the delivery in some of Queensland major infrastructure projects, such as the $1.95b federally funded Ipswich Motorway Upgrade, Brisbane City Council’s $370m Hale Street Link, and the $190m Townsville Port Access Road.
